The Importance of Unstructured "Free Time" Art
6:00:00 AM![]() |
| Pasta Dinner, from a "Free Time" art student. |
In our studio we try to keep the materials accessible to all artists so that they can fully express their own ideas within the context of a project. During our After School Art Club we reserve the last 20-30 min. of every class for creative free time. This is a time for the children to express their own creative energies, and ideas. They are given access to various loose parts, drawing/painting materials, traditional and non-traditional craft supplies, and low temperature hot glue guns (with assistance as needed). They are encouraged to explore their own thoughts during this time. This unstructured time can look very random to the casual observer, but I believe it is fundamental in the development of their creative minds!

I hear so many adults say that they "don't have a creative bone in their body." I don't believe this is true! I believe that somewhere along the path to adulthood they began to believe this because, perhaps they did not create the gallery style art that society and schools and even parents tend to place value on. They began to attach their idea of creativity to only those highly finished professional types of art. But think about true creativity, the ability to risk a thought that differs ever so slightly, and perhaps to represent that thought in a meaningful way.
Some Benefits Of Creative Play
- Children are able to express their own thoughts and feelings.
- Children can begin to make sense of the world around them.
- Creative play can help children deal with big emotions.
- Creative play builds self esteem, their ideas are valid and important.
- Creative play strengthens problem solving skills through experimentation, trial and error.

| Wearable art created during "Free Time" allows the children to experiment and solve problems..."How can I make this stay up?" |
Sometimes what seems like a mess is actually big work...
Take for example this group of girls in the video below. These girls have been in a weekly class together for almost 2 years and have had ample opportunities to explore the materials together and independently. For the past month these three girls have been collaborating on a project together which they wanted to be a surprise...meaning they would not tell me what they were making! I had my suspensions that they did not really know themselves. Each week they would pull out supplies and paint or draw, or glue them together. At the end of class they would pile them all together in a big pile which quickly out grew my storage shelf! For a little over a month we would move this ever growing pile from corner to corner of the room. It became a tripping hazard, lol. Finally, I encouraged them to wrap up the project so that we could dismantle it. I was ready to have the floor space back and I could not see that this was really going anywhere in particular. To me it seemed like unrelated piles of materials that just kept growing...Finally they put it all together and explained their work to us:
It was a Water Park! Every little detail was carefully planned and thought out. They worked together generating ideas, solving problems or disputes, and experimenting with possibilities! It was beautiful and amazing to see their plan come to fruition!
So many times I was tempted to recycle all of these seemingly random parts, but something held me back. I am so glad that I followed my gut on this because these children really created something quite special. Along the way they also really taught me the importance of allowing children the space to explore their own ideas.
So what did they gain from this project?
- They developed problem solving skills.
- They learned cooperation and compromise.
- They took risks and experimented with how to express their thoughts.
- They strengthened their critical thinking skills.
- They followed an idea from conception to completion, follow through.
Though the finished project was not a traditional looking piece of finished art, ready for framing and showing off...it was so much more! It was theirs. I look forward to their next project which I am sure will begin soon. In fact I am clearing out a corner of the studio just for large project storage...

| This child made a projector, and discovered that when she shined a light through it worked! |
We can learn a lot about our children from these creative expressions if we pay attention. In the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood they focus on the 100 languages of children. How do children communicate their thoughts, desires, fears? How do they make sense of the world around them? The Reggio Approach uses art in their classrooms as a means of expression. I believe that older children and even adults can also use open ended visual expression to work out their own thoughts, feelings, and ideas...even if they don't consider themselves to be creative. ;) You don't have to be an "Artist" to use art for personal expression, and it is through this visual expression that we can often gain insight into our own thoughts and feelings.

The focus of this class is on taking time out to care for yourself through a practice based in mindfulness and creative self expression. Each month we will focus on a different theme for the class. We will be led in a guided mindfulness style meditation on the theme by an experienced and trained guide. We will then respond with a visual exploration of the same theme. For our purposes a "meditation" is anything we reflect on and "art" is anything we create. There is no need to be experienced in either meditation or art to participate in this class, though experienced participants are always welcome! We are not affiliated with any religion or sect though participants are encouraged to bring their own spirituality to their practice.
Cost for this monthly class is $35 and it is open to both Men and Women.

Guest Post: Get Unstuck by Aimee Lyons
10:55:00 AMGet Unstuck: How Creative Hobbies Help You Heal Your Addictions and Your Life

In today’s overly-busy society, we often spend
more time checking Facebook “on the go” than we do activities we enjoy with
people we love. Sadly, this negatively impacts our brains, our social
lives, and our happiness. By contrast, if we put down our phones and pick up a
hobby, it can offer mental health and mental fitness benefits. Creative hobbies
such as writing, art, and woodworking actually reduce stress while helping us
heal from pain, addiction, and more.
If you’ve been going through a difficult time or feeling “stuck” lately, here’s how a creative outlet could completely transform your life:
If you’ve been going through a difficult time or feeling “stuck” lately, here’s how a creative outlet could completely transform your life:
1.
Emotional Health
In his book The Happiness of Pursuit, author Chris Guillebeau says our comfort zones are “more like a cage you can’t escape from than a safe place you can retreat to.” When we break free from comfort zones to pursue something new, he believes it brings us a powerful level of joy.
As it turns out, he’s absolutely right. Hobbying can reduce stress, improve mood, and lower cortisol levels in the body. Even a creative outlet like drawing can be meditative, and helps us become more mindful. Our hobbies help us pause and regain a sense of control over our lives. They give us purpose and meaning.

2.
Mental Health
We all need to unwind sometimes. Why not do it while challenging your brain and improving your mental health? Picking up a new hobby is great for the mind. In addition to creating new neuropathways in the brain, it can even reduce your chances of developing Alzheimer’s and dementia.

3.
Confidence and Esteem
Need a confidence boost? Try something new! Creative expression meets you wherever you are, allowing you to create something simple or complex, depending upon your skill level. As you build proficiencies at new skills such as drawing, painting, or woodworking, you’ll also begin to feel accomplished. This will, in turn, raise your self-esteem.
Who knows? Maybe you’ll even become so proficient at your new hobby that you end up opening your own business someday...

4.
Relationships
Hobbies provide valuable opportunities for socializing with people who share your interests. This can be a wonderful way to bond with your loved ones or strengthen relationship with a significant other. If you’re looking to expand your social circle, hobbies also offer opportunities for making new friends, building relationships, and creating a support system of like-minded people.

Addiction Recovery
These days, there are a wild variety of alternative resources available for helping recovering addicts break free from the addiction cycle. Art therapy has shown promising results by providing stress relief, reducing cravings, and allowing recovering addicts to channel their energies and emotions into creative expression.
Artistic hobbies can help you refocus your mind if you are in addiction recovery, making it easier to get (and stay) clean and sober. Taking your mind off your addiction is a great way to remain dedicated to your decision to build a vibrant, creative, and sober life for yourself.

Now that we know the benefits of having a hobby, you might still be hesitant to pick up a paintbrush if you’ve never considered yourself to be creative or artistic. According to author Elizabeth Gilbert, “If you’re alive, you’re a creative person.” All it takes is finding a hobby that resonates with you, then unlocking your creative potential. If painting isn’t your thing, give drawing a try. If you don’t enjoy drawing, try ceramics. Keep trying until you find something you enjoy. The possibilities are endless!
Check out our adult art classes here at the studio for classes that aim to help you discover a creative outlet, focus on self expression, and offer a creative mindfulness approach to art! Read more about our classes here or visit our online store to register.
Of course, there are no magical “quick fixes” for
those who are battling addiction, depression, anxiety, or simply feeling stuck.
Be patient with yourself. Developing a new skill takes time, bravery, and
willingness to be outside of your comfort zone. Just like with anything else in
life, there will be ups, downs, and unexpected challenges. Take your time and
be compassionate with yourself. By going slowly and remaining persistent,
you’ll gradually make baby steps in the right direction. You might even find
that your creative new hobby transforms your life.

Adult classes in the studio
10:22:00 AM
As promised in part 1, Curious about our kid's art classes? We mentioned the idea that many adults have, you know the,"I am not creative" idea. I can not tell you how many times I have had an adult tell me, "I don't have a creative bone in my body!" Well I do not believe that to be true. I am a big believer that all humans are innately creative beings. It is true that many of us have thrown up blocks to our creativity. It is true that not all of us will have our work featured in a museum or gallery, but it is not true that we are not creative. I believe this with my whole heart. There are many types of creativity at play in your life everyday. From the dinner you cooked, to the creative way you solved a problem in the office today. Your life is filled with creative decisions every day. I also think it is true that creativity is a practice that can be strengthened. You can learn to be more creative...
There are many studies which discuss the benefits of fostering your creativity through some sort of creative outlet. Benefits like:
This fun and relaxed class will help you to look at ways to use creativity and art to enrich your life, relax, rejuvenate, express yourself, and even meditate! We are not affiliated with any religion, all beliefs are welcome.
There are many studies which discuss the benefits of fostering your creativity through some sort of creative outlet. Benefits like:
- Reduced levels of stress.
- Improved sense of well being.
- Helps to decrease your negative thoughts.
- Helps you maintain focus.
- Helps build connections in the brain.
- Helps you process your thoughts and feelings.
Your creative outlet does not necessarily need to be "visual art" based, it could be music, or cooking, or anything really, but for our purposes we are going to focus on visual arts. Now, you might be thinking that you "can't even draw a stick figure." Well that is fine. You don't need to be able to draw a stick figure or anything representational.
Our adult classes here at the Basement Community Art Studio focus on visual self-expression and creative play. We are not teaching you to paint a particular painting... nor are we focused on teaching you fine art skills. There are many other studios around that do those things. What we offer is creative sparks, time to let go and play with art. It is our goal to help you reconnect with that child like creativity that has escaped you. Trust me you can not mess it up!
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Creativity takes bravery, you have to push through that inner critic.
- It is OK to make ugly art! I make plenty of it. Not everything you make needs to be put on display. My friend T says, "Some are is meant to be filed away in the blue bin (recycle...not trash).
- The important thing is to play, to have fun, to enjoy the experience of creating. Think process art for adults, lol.
So here at the studio we offer several classes that are focused on that idea of creative play and visual self expression each month:
Note: Adults 21 and over are welcome to BYOB/Wine to any of our adult classes.

Amy teaches a new tangle each meeting and we share, socialize, and enjoy the company of each other as we create. Please see the link for specific dates.
Creative Self-Care is caring for yourself through art and meditation. For our purposes, art is anything we create and meditation is anything we reflect on.
