Meet our newest instructor: Karen Byars

Karen Byars has worked and taught workshops at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg and
has recently retired from teaching art in Sevier County School System. She is excited to get more
involved in community settings like The Basement Community Art Studio working with children, teens
and adults through art. She believes that the creative process of artmaking helps us get in touch with
our true self and helps us open up to share our gifts with others. She currently lives in Oak Ridge.

We are very excited to be welcoming Karen to the studio! She will be offering three classes beginning in September and October.


  • On Mondays in September beginning on Sept. 11 she will be offering a Teen, Expressive Arts Journaling class. This will be geared to teens 12 and up and will focus on creative self discovery and journaling techniques.   • Saturdays in October she will be offering a Meet the Masters class for children age 8-12. This class is a 4 week session, but we will likely repeat it in the Spring! Read the full description and register for this class HERE.
  • Also on Saturdays in October, Karen will be offering an adult version of her Expressive Art Journaling Class! This will also be a one month class, but might repeat in the Spring as well. To read the full class description or to register for this class click HERE.
